Leontina Vaduva
Soprano, exile, (b. 1964, Romania),
resident of France
Fulfillment:
The Romanian artist can only fulfil itself abroad.
(Interview to a Romanian newspaper, 2001)
Positive Discrimination:
I am sorry when I see that the Romanians are willing
to pay huge amounts of money to bring foreign singers to Romania,
yet, at the same time they expect the Romanian singers to perform
for free. They simply want to save monies when it comes to the
Romanians. But when they deal instead with Domingo, Carreras,
or Pavarotti, they would do anything. Why? We have presently
Romanian singers abroad perhaps on par with the big names, yet
they are offered only a fraction of the going rate for the big
stars, to come and perform on the stage of the Romanian Opera.
(Interview to a Romanian newspaper, 2001)
Opera:
In general the state of the Opera reflects the economic
health of the country. Who might be interested in being patrons
of the Arts? The rich people in Romania are rich only for themselves.
We lack the culture of the Patronage in Romania. The sponsors,
instead of paying the earth for Pavarotti would do better paying
for the sheet music, the costumes and the salaries of musicians.
The vain-glorious feeling of paying for a star to come over
be it even of Pavarottis fame does not make sense when
the Romanian cultural scene is in doldrums. (Interview
to a Romanian newspaper, 2001)
Biography:
Since Leontina Vaduvas debut on
the stage of the Toulouse Opera House, in 1987, her rise to
success was meteoric: she was acclaimed successively at the
Royal Opera House Covent Garden (1988), at Vienna Staatsoper
(1991) and again at Covent garden in 1994. This followed with
her American debut with San Francisco Opera in 1996, adding
to the series of her performances on the stages of Munich, Paris,
Brussels, Barcelona, the Scala Milano and the New Yorks
Metropolitan Opera. Her debut at the Metropolitan, in 2000,
was in the role of Mimi in La Boheme. This was followed by the
Los Angeles Opera (Marguerite in Gounods Faust), in the
year 2000 and and again at the opera in Baltimore in 2001.
Leontina Vaduva is a resident of France where she was honoured,
in 1999, with the Legion dHonneur. (Chevalier de L'Ordre
des Arts et Lettres).
For her performance of Manon she received in 1988 the Laurence
Olivier Award.
